Get the data-driven edge with Quant Like a Trader
In Quant Like a Trader, you’ll learn simple, practical quant techniques that anyone can apply – whether you’re a seasoned trader looking for a data-driven approach or a total newcomer.
You won’t need to know how to code, and you can use these techniques even if you suck at math.
Transform your trading with simple data analysis
A wise man once said, “There are two types of trading: quantitative… and guessing”.
Data analysis and portfolio construction skills are the core of successful quant trading.
It’s critical that you have the skills to create and test market hypotheses using data analysis techniques.
Portfolio construction is the key to harnessing the edges from your data analysis in a sensible, sustainable manner.
Quant Like a Trader is your gateway to mastering these skills.
What you’ll gain from Trade Like a Quant:
Harness the power of data
You’ll learn how to dissect market data and extract meaningful insights that can be turned into profitable trading strategies.
From cleaning and organising data to creating testable hypotheses, as well as the simple data analysis techniques we use in our trading every day, this course covers all the essentials of effective data analysis.
Develop a research mindset
Trading isn’t just about buying and selling; it’s about understanding the market’s underlying mechanics.
We’ll guide you through the process of conducting rigorous research, using techniques like factor analysis and event studies to identify and exploit market inefficiencies.
Learn to weigh quantitative evidence and deal with uncertainty
The hallmark of good trading is dealing effectively with uncertainty.
You’ll see examples of quant research and a level of uncertainty in the evidence. Follow along as we wade through the evidence and make data-driven decisions about what to trade and how to trade it.
Construct a portfolio of systematic edges
Unlock the art of portfolio construction, where you’ll combine multiple strategies to create a diversified, risk-managed trading portfolio that is greater than the sum of its parts.
Learn to use simulation effectively
You’ll learn how to use simulation for decision-making and position sizing, as well as for answering statistical questions without doing any math.

Module 1
Working with Financial Data
In Trade Like a Quant, we concentrated on growing your market intuition and trading smarts.
In the first Module of Quant Like a Trader, you’ll learn the basics of doing effective quant research.
This isn’t going to be super-complicated, esoteric nerd stuff.
We’re talking about simple data analysis you can do in Excel or a statistical programming language like R or Python (but you don’t need to have coding skills to do this course).
This is where the rubber meets the road, where you’ll learn the core techniques needed to test out ideas and model market phenomena.
You’ll start by learning how to uncover assumptions you make about the markets and form them into testable hypotheses.
For instance, if you use a stop loss to “control risk”, what does that really mean?
What risk do you actually care about?
What needs to be true about the markets for that rule to actually do what you want?
This Module is about challenging your assumptions, “calling bullshit” on your own ideas, and turning them into something concrete that you can test against market data.
You’ll also get hands-on with data.
We’ll cover how to acquire, validate, clean, and reshape financial data to suit your analysis needs.
Finally, we’ll work through examples of handling price and return data, highlighting common pitfalls and how to avoid them.
By the end of Module 4, you’ll have a solid grasp of the fundamental skills needed to work with financial data with confidence.
Module 2
Research Mindset and Data Analysis Techniques
This Module is all about cultivating the right mindset for doing effective research: one that’s fast-moving, adaptive, and ready to get messy in the pursuit of meaningful insights.
I want you to feel empowered to experiment, make mistakes, and learn from them.
You can always refine and perfect your approach later.
We start with a crucial discussion on bias.
Every piece of data you encounter will be biased in some way.
Understanding and controlling for this bias is key to effective analysis.
Next we look at the basics of return prediction – which, after all, is what most of trading is about.
You’ll discover how to identify factors that can help predict asset returns and how to apply them in your trading.
We’ll cover the essentials of the following techniques:
- Data munging: Reshaping your data for easier analysis
- Plotting histograms: Visualizing data distributions
- Basic time-series analysis: Understanding trends and temporal patterns
- Dealing with non-stationarity: Normalizing data
- Scatterplots: Exploring relationships between variables
- Factor analysis: Does a factor or feature predict returns?
- Event studies and markout analysis: How does the market move, on average, around a predictable event?
By the end of Module 5, you’ll be equipped with the skills to conduct exploratory data analysis and design simple, effective, systematic trading strategies.
Module 6
Simulation, Portfolio Construction, and the Fine Art of Sitting on your Hands
In the final Module, we bring it all together, focusing on how to use simulation for portfolio decision-making, sizing, and risk management.
You’ll discover a simple yet powerful quantitative approach to portfolio management and learn how to combine trading strategies into a high-performing portfolio.
The key to success here is leveraging “ensemble” methods, combining multiple noisy strategies to achieve extraordinary results.
Or, as we like to say, “Trading More S**t”.
Next, we’ll look at how simulation can help us answer questions, even if we’re bad at math.
You might not always be able to solve problems in closed form, as I often can’t, but we’ll show you how you can use simulation to answer questions.
Questions like:
- What is the probability an effect I observe is due to random chance?
- Under what conditions might a stop loss or time stop rule be helpful?
Next, we’ll look at how we can design a set of processes to exploit the effects we observe in the market.
Here, we allow everything to be driven by the effect we think exists. The effect comes first, then the rules and processes to exploit it.
We’ll also look at backtesting, and show you how we use it – which is different than many people think (hint: it’s not a research tool).
By the end of Module 6, you’ll master:
- A system for thinking about portfolio construction, both practically and emotionally
- Setting clear portfolio management objectives
- Identifying and managing risk factors
- Sizing and rebalancing positions and strategy exposures
- Attributing P&L to the return drivers in your portfolio
- What to do when the market throws you a curveball
- Staying calm and “Trading More S**t” with confidence
You won’t be left floundering.
We’ll help you think about how to structure things to meet your unique objectives and risk tolerance.
You’ll know exactly what to do with the next addition to your systematic trading portfolio.
We finish the course with a discussion of what’s next, and the reassurance that “There Will Always Be More Trades“.
The trader needs to balance confidence and humility. You must never pretend that trading is not hard. You must never think you’ve got it all figured out. A certain amount of anxiety that you are losing your edge is appropriate.
But you must be confident in your ability to find new trades.
You are smart. You have good tools. You have solid strategies. You have a solid approach to the markets.
You have examples of good, quick, pragmatic research. You have tried-and-tested strategy frameworks.
You have realistic expectations about the market mayhem. You have a team of people who will help you and share ideas.
Stay relaxed, think clearly, don’t get greedy, stay true to the fundamentals, and generously give your time and knowledge to others.
There will always be new trades and new ideas.
